Phlox drummondii

Phlox drummondii

Phlox have a wonderful warm peppery scent and are a delightful low growing summer annual. They are native to Texas and relish a position in full sun with dry sandy soil. The colour range available is mainly pink, red and white sometimes with a contrasting central "eye". A fringed petal variety called "twinkle" or 'Sternenzauber' from Germany is sometimes available also. The cleverly named cultivar 'phlox of sheep' was released by a seed company some years ago and is worth seeking out if you want an unusual colour mix, though I have not grown them, it included a yellow and some very muddy colours in between.
