Rosa rugosa, Japanese Rose

Rose Heps on Rugosa Rose

Rosa rugosa
This is the last rose I could find in flower today which still looked quite good. Rugosa roses are sometimes called Japanese roses. (In Japanese Hamanasu) They grow close to the seashore and tolerate fairly harsh conditions . They occur in other parts of Asia as well. In Korea they are called Haedanghwa. They are very vigorous, are prickly and form quite a dense thicket as they sucker freely For this reason they can be planted as a barrier hedge. I love the tomato like fruit of the Rugosa Roses which have a real shine to them.
2017 update: available from specialist rose nurseries.
